Aloe Spinosissima
The Aloe Spinosissima is a hybrid succulent particularly appreciated for its graphic aesthetic and ease of cultivation. Resulting from the cross between the Aloe Arborescens and the Aloe Humilis, it combines the qualities of robustness and beauty of its parents. This plant is ideal for succulent enthusiasts looking for a species that is both decorative, resilient and easy to care for.
The Aloe Spinosissima forms a dense rosette composed of thick, elongated and slightly curved leaves. These leaves are a deep green, sometimes slightly tinged with red or orange under the effect of sun or water stress. They are edged with small flexible teeth and display fine white outgrowths on their surface, giving them a slightly textured and very aesthetic appearance.
Unlike many strictly solitary aloes, this plant tends to produce offsets at its base, gradually forming a compact clump. This clumping growth makes it particularly interesting for creating a dense visual effect, whether in pots or in the ground in regions with mild climates.
Although it does not grow in the wild, its parents are native to South Africa, in arid and sunny areas.
🌞 Direct sun to partial shade: ideally 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for compact growth and more intense colors.
🌤️ Gradual adaptation: if moved outdoors, acclimate the plant gradually to avoid burns.
🏠 Indoors: place it near a south or west-facing window, with maximum natural light.
💡 Indicator: leaves that elongate or pale indicate a lack of light.
🌱 Spring / summer (active growth): water moderately when the substrate is completely dry. On average every 2 to 3 weeks depending on heat.
🍂 Autumn / winter (rest): greatly reduce watering, about once a month or less.
⚡ Essential rule: never leave standing water in the saucer.
💧 Tip: slight water stress can intensify the red colors of the leaves.
🌞 Ideal temperature: between 18°C and 30°C for optimal growth.
🌡️ Resistance: tolerates high heat well if the substrate is draining and watering controlled.
❄️ Minimum temperature: can tolerate occasionally 5°C, but does not tolerate frost.
🏠 Wintering: in temperate climates, prefer bright indoor cultivation during winter.
🪨 Key principle: a light, airy soil poor in organic matter.
🔬 Recommended mix: 30 to 40% special cactus soil + 30 to 40% perlite + 20 to 30% pouzzolane
🧱 Advanced option: addition of coarse sand or gravel to further improve drainage.
🌸 Period: mainly in spring, sometimes from the end of winter depending on growing conditions.
🎨 Color: bright red to vivid orange, sometimes with gradient shades along the inflorescence.
🌼 Structure: long upright flower stalks reaching 30 to 60 cm, bearing numerous tight tubular flowers.
