Opuntia Zebrina Reticulata
The Opuntia Zebrina Reticulata is an original and decorative cactus belonging to the large Opuntia family. This cultivar stands out for its flat pads with a unique pattern of purplish zebra-like or reticulated markings, which give it its name.
The classic paddle structure of the species is highlighted here by irregular purple mottling, often more intense in full sun. These natural marblings make each plant visually unique. It is generally spineless or nearly so, making it an excellent choice for safe gardens or bright interiors.
Under ideal conditions, Opuntia Zebrina Reticulata can reach several tens of centimeters in height, with relatively fast growth. Its graphic appearance and ease of care make it highly appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
In its original environment, it grows in rocky soils under intense sunlight and withstands long periods of drought. This extreme background explains its robustness and tolerance to harsh conditions.
🌞 Direct light: At least 4 to 6 hours of sun per day. Full sun enhances the purple coloration of the pads.
🏜️ Outdoor cultivation: Ideal in pots or rock gardens, facing south or west.
🏠 Indoor cultivation: Place near a very bright window. In winter, supplemental grow lighting may be useful.
💦 Spring / Summer: Water every 15 to 20 days, always allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
❄️ Autumn / Winter: Stop watering or reduce to once a month depending on conditions.
⚠️ Important: Avoid standing water in saucers and always use a well-draining substrate.
🌡️ Ideal: 18 to 30°C during the growing season.
❄️ Minimum tolerated: Down to 0°C if the soil is completely dry, but protect from prolonged frost.
💡 Tip: A dry, bright winter rest around 5 to 10°C improves vigor in spring.
🪨 Recommended mix: 50% cactus soil, 30% perlite, 20% pumice or coarse gravel.
⛏️ Bottom drainage: Add a layer of drainage granules to quickly evacuate excess moisture.
📅 Period: From May to August.
🌼 Flowers: Bright yellow with a reddish center, cup-shaped, appearing on the oldest pads.
🌿 Encouraging flowering: Provide a winter rest, strong light, and cactus fertilizer in spring.
