Cleistocactus Strausii
The Cleistocactus Strausii, also known as the Silver Torch Cactus, is one of the most elegant and decorative columnar cacti in the plant kingdom. Its slender silhouette covered in white hairs makes it a true living sculpture that attracts both collectors and beginners. Native to the high altitudes of Bolivia, this cactus naturally grows in rocky areas between 1,500 and 3,000 meters above sea level, where the sun is intense but nighttime temperatures remain cool.
This cactus stands out for its upright form and cylindrical stems that can reach 1 to 2 meters in pots, and even more in the ground in dry climates. Each stem is covered with fine white spines and silvery hairs that give it a soft, almost cotton-like texture. This coating is not only decorative: it acts as a natural sunscreen, protecting the plant from excessive UV rays.
When mature, usually after several years, the Cleistocactus Strausii can bloom, producing dark red to purple tubular flowers that emerge horizontally from the sides of the stems. Although discreet, these flowers contrast beautifully with the cactus’ silvery coat. Indoors, flowering is quite rare but not impossible if growing conditions are properly respected.
🏖️ Summer : Provide light shading if the sun is scorching (heatwaves).
🌥️ Lack of light : May cause stem etiolation (it stretches and loses firmness).
🍂 Autumn / Winter : Stop watering or space it out as much as possible (every 6 to 8 weeks).
⚠️ Tip : Excess water is fatal. This cactus rots easily if the roots sit in moisture.
❄️ Cold resistance : Down to -5°C if the substrate is dry. In pots, bring indoors as soon as temperatures drop below 5°C.
🏡 Wintering : Bright and cool place (ideally between 8°C and 12°C) without watering.
🪨 Ideal mix: 50% cactus potting soil + 50% pumice or pozzolana.
🎨 Color : Dark red to purple.
📏 Shape : Tubular, about 4 cm long, emerging horizontally from the stem.
