Mammillaria Bocasana Fred Monstruosa
The Mammillaria Bocasana Fred Monstruosa is an exceptional mutant form of the well-known Mammillaria Bocasana. This “monstruosa” version is characterized by a chaotic, asymmetrical and fascinating growth. Unlike the regular cushion-shaped form, it develops bulges, irregular masses and woolly distortions, making it a sculptural and unpredictable cactus. Highly sought after by collectors, this form immediately draws attention with its strange structures and abundant cotton-like texture.
Its skin ranges from pale green to greyish, often hidden beneath a dense white wool formed by the areoles. Small hooked spines, sometimes barely visible, intertwine within this fluffy mass. Each specimen is unique, with shapes that may be rounded, crested, or completely chaotic.
This cactus remains relatively small but can spread horizontally over time. In summer, it may produce small pale pink flowers that contrast beautifully with its wild appearance.
☀️ Bright light: Provide at least 5 to 6 hours of indirect light per day. Gentle morning sun is ideal.
🌤️ Protection: Avoid harsh midday sun, especially in summer, to prevent damage to the sensitive growths.
🏡 Indoors: Place near a well-exposed window, ideally facing south or west.
💧 Spring / Summer: Water every 15 to 20 days depending on temperature, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
❄️ Autumn / Winter: Stop watering or reduce drastically (maximum once per month) if temperatures are low.
⚠️ Warning: Due to its irregular shape, water may collect in crevices. Water from the bottom or along the edge of the pot.
🌡️ Ideal: 20 to 28 °C during the growing season.
❄️ Minimum: Down to 4 °C if the substrate is perfectly dry.
🌬️ Tip: Provide a bright winter rest at 8–12 °C to encourage flowering.
🪨 Ideal mix: 50 % cactus potting soil, 25 % perlite, 25 % pumice or lava rock.
⛏️ Drainage: Always add a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot.
🌸 Season: Generally between May and July.
🌺 Flowers: Small tubular flowers, pale pink to soft rose, sometimes discreet due to the deformations.
💡 Flowering tip: Provide winter rest, strong light and suitable feeding in spring.
