Mammillaria Longimamma
Mammillaria Longimamma is a striking and attractive cactus, easily recognizable by its elongated tubercles, unique within the Mammillaria genus.
With its original appearance and generous flowering, it catches the eye both in a collector’s display and on a sunny windowsill. Its distinctive morphology, combined with spectacular bright yellow flowers, makes it a standout centerpiece.
This species often produces offsets, forming dense clumps that eventually fill the pot. Each tubercle bears an areole at its tip with fine white to yellowish spines, beautifully contrasting with the tender green epidermis. In full bloom, Mammillaria Longimamma literally transforms into a natural bouquet.
Undemanding yet fond of light and warmth, it rewards attentive care with spectacular blooms. Its relatively fast growth for a Mammillaria makes it a gratifying plant to cultivate.
The climate alternates between hot sunny days exceeding 35°C and cool nights with rapid temperature drops. Rainfall is rare but sometimes intense, forcing the plant to efficiently store water in its fleshy tissues.
🌞 Full sun: essential to maintain compact form and encourage abundant flowering.
🌤️ Bright light: possible but less favorable for bloom production.
💡 After winter, gradually increase exposure to avoid sunburn.
🌱 Spring / summer: water generously, but only when the substrate is dry deep down.
🍂 Autumn / winter: greatly reduce or stop if overwintered in cool conditions.
⚠️ Excess water, especially in cold weather, is the main cause of rot.
🌡️ Optimal: between 20 and 28°C during growth.
❄️ Minimum: down to 5°C when dry, but does not tolerate prolonged frost.
🏠 In winter, a bright and cool location encourages dormancy.
🪨 Ideal mix: 50% cactus soil + 25% perlite + 25% pozzolana
🌸 Period: generally in spring.
🎨 Color: brilliant yellow, beautifully contrasting with the tender green body.
🕑 Flowers may last several days and follow one another for weeks.
