Mammillaria Matudae
If you are looking for a cactus that combines floral elegance, graceful habit, and easy cultivation, Mammillaria Matudae is an ideal choice. Little known to the general public, this Mexican jewel nevertheless deserves a prime place in any collection.
This cactus forms small, slightly elongated cylindrical columns covered with tubercles arranged in a spiral. Each areole produces numerous fine white spines, often silky, contrasting with a few longer central spines. The habit of Mammillaria Matudae remains compact, making it perfect for pot cultivation, in a bright interior or greenhouse.
But it is especially in spring that it reveals its splendor: it then covers itself with a crown of bright pink to magenta flowers that open in a star shape around the apex, creating a spectacular effect. Undemanding and very floriferous, it adapts equally well to beginners and experienced collectors.
🌞 Ideal exposure: bright light, direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
🌤️ In summer: Avoid scorching sun during the hottest hours if the plant is behind glass.
💡 Lack of light causes etiolation: the stem elongates abnormally.
💧 From March to September: Water every 10 to 20 days depending on heat and substrate, only when the soil is dry.
🍂 Winter rest: Stop watering completely if the plant is kept cool.
⚠️ Too much water or poorly drained substrate quickly causes collar rot.
🌡️ Ideal temperature: between 18 and 28°C.
❄️ Minimum tolerated: down to -3°C when dry, otherwise a minimum of 5°C is recommended.
🏠 Indoor cultivation: Perfect in a bright room or veranda.
🪨 Ideal mix: 40% cactus soil + 30% perlite + 30% pozzolana
A terracotta pot is recommended to promote moisture evaporation.
🌸 Period: from March to May
🎨 Color: intense pink to magenta
💡 The flowers open in a crown around the top, often in great numbers. With good conditions, it blooms from its third or fourth year.
