Hoya Carnosa
The Hoya Carnosa is undoubtedly the most iconic of all Hoyas. Renowned for its robustness, intoxicating fragrance and exceptional longevity, it has adorned homes, balconies and greenhouses for decades. This climbing species from the Apocynaceae family is characterized by its thick, glossy, oval leaves, usually deep green, sometimes variegated with cream or pink in certain cultivars. Its flexible, twining stems can reach several meters in length when given support, or cascade elegantly from hanging pots.
Beyond its decorative foliage, the Hoya Carnosa is especially loved for its spherical, waxy inflorescences. Each umbel is composed of around thirty small pink or white star-shaped flowers with a deep purple center, releasing a sweet and distinctive fragrance. These flowers appear during the warm season on persistent peduncles that should never be cut, as they bloom again year after year.

🚫 Too much direct sun: leaf burn risk
☁️ Too little light: little or no flowering
Proper lighting is the key to abundant flowering and vibrant foliage.
🌱 Spring / Summer: water when the top layer of substrate is dry
🍂 Autumn / Winter: water every 15–20 days depending on temperature
⚠️ Excess water: soft leaves and root rot
