Hoya Australis
The Hoya Australis is one of the best-known and easiest to grow species of the Hoya genus, making it an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced collectors. Native to Australia, as its name suggests, this climbing or trailing plant charms with its leathery, glossy, deep green foliage and its spectacular flowering, which often releases a soft vanilla fragrance. It is a species that perfectly combines aesthetics, robustness and floriferousness.
The leaves of the Hoya Australis are oval, smooth and slightly fleshy, forming long flexible stems that can climb or trail depending on the support provided. This epiphytic vine produces umbels of star-shaped flowers, generally white with a pink center, very attractive to pollinating insects. The flowers often appear in successive waves from spring onwards, provided the plant has benefited from a bright and moderately dry winter.
🌞 Bright indirect light: ideally near a south- or east-facing window
🚫 Avoid direct full sun which can burn the leaves
🌱 Low light greatly slows flowering
💧 Spring / summer: moderate watering as soon as the substrate is dry a few centimeters down
❄️ Winter: space out watering, once every 2 to 3 weeks depending on the environment
⚠️ Stress symptoms: soft leaves (too much water) or wrinkled leaves (lack of water)
🌡️ Ideal: between 18 and 26 °C
❄️ Minimum: 10 °C, to be avoided long term
💨 Likes air circulation, but not cold drafts
🪨 Prefer an airy mix: special succulent soil, perlite, and some plant fibers
🛒 Combine a substrate suitable for succulents with perlite for proper drainage
🌸 Period: from spring to summer
🌼 Flowers: white with a pink center, grouped in umbels
👃 Fragrance: soft, slightly sweet
💡 Flowering is encouraged by a winter rest period
