Ferocactus Histrix

Among the giants of the Mexican desert, Ferocactus Histrix stands out for its formidable appearance and primitive elegance. Sometimes nicknamed the “bristling barrel,” this globular columnar cactus immediately catches the eye with its marked ribs, thick curved spines, and ability to survive in extreme conditions.

Ferocactus Histrix forms a globular to flattened stem, becoming more cylindrical with age, reaching up to 80 cm tall and 50 cm wide in pots, and much larger in its natural environment. Its skin is deep green, lined with numerous thick vertical ribs, each adorned with areoles bearing powerful yellow to brown spines. These spines, sometimes hook-shaped, provide effective protection against predators… and distracted gardeners!

Native to the semi-desert regions of Mexico, Ferocactus Histrix is perfectly adapted to drought, extreme heat, and also cold, dry winters. It is renowned for its longevity, hardiness, and its magnificent yellow flowers that appear in a crown at the top of the plant during the warm season.

Ferocactus Histrix grows on mountain slopes or in arid plains, on poor, rocky, and very well-drained soils, often at more than 1000 meters in altitude. Its low and massive habit makes it wind-resistant, while its deep roots allow it to seek moisture far below the surface.
Full sun is vital for the health of Ferocactus Histrix.

🌞 Ideal exposure: 6 to 8 hours of direct light per day.

🌤️ Indoors: Place it behind a south-facing window or under a glass roof.

💡 Without sufficient light, growth slows and areoles become more spaced.
Ferocactus Histrix must dry out completely between waterings.

💧 Spring / summer: Water about every 3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry.

🍂 Autumn / winter: No watering if the plant is overwintered in cool conditions.

⚠️ Stagnant humidity is the enemy of this cactus. Prefer abundant but spaced watering rather than frequent watering.
Resistant to both heat and cold, Ferocactus Histrix is a tough species.

🌡️ Ideal temperature range: between 18°C and 35°C.

❄️ Hardiness: Can withstand occasional drops to -5°C when dry. Ideally keep above 5°C.

🏠 Overwintering: In a bright, unheated indoor space or cold greenhouse.
A perfectly well-drained substrate is essential to prevent root rot.

🪨 Recommended mix: 40% cactus soil + 30% perlite + 30% pozzolana

Use a terracotta pot with efficient drainage.
The flowers of Ferocactus Histrix are as beautiful as they are rare.

🌸 Period: Summer, generally between June and August.

🎨 Color: Bright yellow to orange-yellow, sometimes streaked with red.

🕑 Duration: Each flower lasts a few days, but they appear in succession.

💡 Flowering requires a mature plant, strong sunlight, strict winter rest, and slight water stress.
