Echinocactus Grusonii Setispinus
The Echinocactus Grusonii Setispinus is a striking and less common variation of the iconic mother-in-law’s cushion. While it retains its typical spherical shape and spiny barrel appearance, this version stands out with longer, finer, sometimes reddish spines, as well as a tendency to produce very colorful flowers.
Its dark green globular body, marked by well-defined ribs, is adorned with long, upright spines that may intertwine, giving the plant an even more heavily armed look. When well grown, this cactus can reach up to 30 cm in diameter and produce offsets at its base, forming a dense colony over time.
The flowering, often more generous than in the classic Echinocactus Grusonii, is a true spectacle. Funnel-shaped flowers bloom at the top of the plant, displaying shades ranging from bright yellow to orange, sometimes with red or pink highlights depending on conditions.
🌞 Direct sunlight: At least 6 hours per day. Bright light ensures a compact shape and stimulates flowering.
🌤️ Heatwave protection: During extreme heat, light shade can help prevent sunburn on the epidermis.
🌱 Spring / Summer: Water once every 2 to 3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: Space watering widely or stop altogether. Excess moisture increases the risk of rot.
⚠️ Never leave water in the saucer.
🌡️ Ideal temperature: Between 20°C and 30°C.
❄️ Minimum tolerated: Down to 5°C briefly, but avoid frost.
🏠 In winter, place it in a cool, bright, frost-free location.
🪨 Recommended substrate: A mix of cactus soil and 50% pumice or lava rock is ideal to ensure excellent root aeration.
💧 Avoid overly rich universal potting soils at all costs: they retain water and greatly increase the risk of rot.
🌼 Season: From spring to summer.
🎨 Color: Bright yellow to orange-red, sometimes bicolored.
🕑 Duration: Several days.
💡 Tip: A slight water stress can encourage flowering.
