Echinocactus Grusonii Intermedius Uncinatus
The Echinocactus Grusonii Intermedius Uncinatus is an uncommon variant of the famous "mother-in-law's cushion" (Echinocactus Grusonii), distinguished by its hooked and often more robust spines. This intermediate form sits between the classic spherical appearance and more elongated subspecies, offering a blend of traditional aesthetics and botanical originality.
This cactus features a dark green to blue-green body with pronounced ribs lined with white areoles bearing powerful spines, some of which are hooked — hence the epithet uncinatus, meaning "hooked". These yellow to amber spines stand out for their density and orientation. Each plant is a unique specimen capable of living for several decades under proper conditions.
Over time, this cactus can reach a diameter of 30 to 50 cm, becoming a true collector’s gem, appreciated both in pots and in dry gardens.
🌞 Direct light: 6 to 8 hours per day is ideal.
🌤️ Summer protection: During heatwaves (>35°C), light shading is recommended to prevent burns.
Insufficient light causes abnormal elongation and loss of color intensity.
🌱 Spring / Summer: Water once every 3 to 4 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: Almost stop watering during dormancy, unless indoor temperatures remain very high.
⚠️ Tip: Water around the edge of the pot to avoid wetting the collar.
🌡️ Ideal growth temperature: 22 to 32°C.
❄️ Cold tolerance: Can tolerate brief drops to 5°C if kept dry, but must never freeze.
🏡 Winter: Move to a bright room sheltered from cold drafts.
🪨 Recommended mix: 50% cactus soil + 30% pouzzolane + 20% drainage granules.
💡 Avoid mixes rich in peat, as they retain too much moisture.
🌼 Season: Late spring to summer.
🎨 Color: Bright yellow, forming a crown at the top.
🕒 Duration: A few days only, often followed by small dry fruits.
