Echinocactus Grusonii Setispinus Cristata
The Echinocactus Grusonii Setispinus Cristata is a rarity in the cactus world, combining two well-known species: Echinocactus Grusonii, also known as the "mother-in-law's cushion", and Setispinus, a smaller and more discreet Texan cactus. Here, their cristate mutation gives rise to a spectacular sculptural form highly sought after by collectors.
Its growth does not follow classic rules: instead of forming a globe or a column, this cactus develops sinuous and irregular crests. Its areoles are arranged irregularly on dark green to olive-green undulations, sometimes marbled with lighter shades. The spines are often yellow, fine and straight, creating a strong contrast with the epidermis.
Each specimen is unique and almost impossible to reproduce identically: cristation is an unstable mutation, making every cactus a living work of art.
In their natural habitat, these cacti grow on very well-drained rocky soils, under intense sunlight and very low rainfall. Their resilience is remarkable, but in pots they still require specific care.
🌞 Direct sunlight: At least 6 hours per day. A veranda or cold greenhouse is ideal.
🌤️ Protection: In summer, if temperatures are very high, light shading during the hottest hours helps prevent burns on the crests.
💡 Insufficient light will cause the cactus to lose its color and original shape.
🌱 Spring - Summer: Water every 15 to 25 days. Always let the substrate dry completely between waterings.
🍂 Autumn - Winter: No watering during dormancy. Resume watering only in spring.
⚠️ Excess water causes crest collapse or collar rot.
❄️ Winter: Tolerates occasional drops to 5°C if kept completely dry. Never expose to frost.
🏠 Overwintering: A cool (10–15°C) and bright room is perfect.
🪨 Ideal mix: 50% cactus soil, 25% pouzzolane, 25% coarse sand.
⚠️ Never use pure garden soil, as it retains too much moisture.
🌼 Season: Late spring to summer.
🎨 Flowers: Golden yellow, forming a crown around the crests.
🕑 Duration: 2 to 5 days per flower.
