Notocactus Uebelmannianus Monstruoso
The Notocactus Uebelmannianus Monstruoso is a rare and fascinating form of the well-known Notocactus Uebelmannianus. It is a mutation known as “monstruosa” or “monstruoso”, which alters the natural growth habit of the cactus to create irregular, compact, and sometimes contorted shapes. This atypical growth makes it an exceptional piece in any collection.
Unlike the classic form, the Notocactus Uebelmannianus Monstruoso develops a less regular, often asymmetrical body, with twisted ribs, bumps, folds, or unusual crests. Its dark green coloration is sometimes marked by purplish hues under strong sunlight. Its spines are more scattered and sometimes absent, revealing irregular areoles.
Its flowering, although occasional, remains just as spectacular: large yellow flowers appear at the top of well-established specimens, beautifully contrasting with the chaotic shapes of the cactus body.
🌞 Bright but filtered light: Prefer morning sun or very intense indirect light.
🌤️ Indoors: Place behind a south-facing window or under grow lights.
🌡️ To avoid: Prolonged exposure to full summer sun without acclimation may cause sunburn on sensitive bumps.
🌱 Spring / summer: Light watering approximately every 3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / winter: No watering if the plant is kept cool and dry.
⚠️ Tip: The irregular body may retain moisture in certain areas. Always water carefully and locally.
🌡️ Ideal range: 20 °C to 28 °C.
❄️ Cold tolerance: Occasional tolerance down to 5 °C if the plant is completely dry.
🏠 Tip: Place in a bright, unheated space for wintering (5–10 °C) to encourage future flowering.
🪨 Recommended substrate: 50 % cactus substrate + 50 % mineral components such as pumice or perlite.
💡 Tip: Avoid oversized pots. A small, well-drained container is preferable.
🌸 Season: Spring to summer, on mature and well-rooted plants.
🎨 Flowers: Bright yellow, sometimes slightly orange at the center.
🕑 Duration: A few days, but flowers may appear in succession.
