Notocactus Scopa
The Notocactus Scopa is a South American globular cactus highly appreciated by enthusiasts for its silhouette covered with golden spines and its vivid flowering. Compact, hardy and spectacular in pots or planters, it fits perfectly into a collection or on a well-sunlit windowsill.
Its shape is generally spherical to slightly cylindrical, reaching up to 15 cm in height at maturity. It has between 20 and 30 well-defined ribs, regularly spaced, bearing woolly areoles from which emerge numerous golden radial spines, fine but sharp, sometimes intertwined. The apex is often covered with a fine white down that is very decorative.
The Notocactus Scopa produces magnificent funnel-shaped flowers, generally yellow, sometimes tinged with orange at the center. They appear in a crown at the top of the plant in spring and summer, offering a striking contrast with the green epidermis and the golden reflections of the spines.
🌞 Direct sunlight: Ideally 4 to 6 hours per day. It enjoys a very bright location, even indoors.
🌤️ In summer: If the sun is too strong, provide light filtered shade during the hottest hours.
⚠️ Warning: A lack of light leads to etiolation and duller epidermis coloration.
🌱 Spring / summer: Moderate watering every 2 to 3 weeks, only when the substrate is dry deep down.
🍂 Autumn / winter: Gradually reduce until watering is completely stopped if the plant is resting in cool conditions.
💡 Tip: Always water around the edge of the pot, never at the center, to prevent moisture accumulation at the collar.
🌡️ Comfort range: 18°C to 28°C.
❄️ Lower limit: Down to 5°C if the plant is perfectly dry.
🏠 Wintering: Place the plant in a bright, cool and airy room between November and March.
🪨 Ideal mix: 50% cactus substrate + 50% draining materials (pumice, perlite, coarse sand).
🧪 Tip: Add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot to prevent excess stagnant water.
🌸 Period: Spring to summer.
🎨 Color: Bright yellow, sometimes orange-tinged, open corolla.
⏳ Duration: 3 to 5 days, with possible succession over several weeks.
