Mammillaria Perbella
The Mammillaria Perbella is a small gem in the cactus world, as charming as it is easy to grow. Native to central Mexico, this globular cactus is admired for its compact shape, fine white spines forming a soft cushion, and above all its crown of bright pink flowers that often appears in late spring or early summer.
This cactus belongs to the large Mammillaria family, known for its characteristic tubercles (instead of ribs) from which areoles and flowers emerge. The Mammillaria Perbella is particularly valued for its gentle and ornamental appearance. It remains small, rarely exceeding 12 cm in diameter, making it ideal for pot cultivation on a windowsill or in a greenhouse.
Despite its small size, its flowering is spectacular. The flowers form a crown around the top of the cactus, creating a delicate diadem that contrasts beautifully with its coat of white spines. After flowering, it may also produce small elongated red fruits containing easily germinated seeds.
🌞 Gentle direct sunlight: Ideally 4 to 6 hours per day. Morning sun is preferable to harsh afternoon sun.
🌤️ Indoors: Place it near a well-exposed window, but avoid unfiltered south-facing glass.
🌱 Tip: Insufficient light causes etiolation, making the cactus stretch and lose its round shape.
🌿 Spring / Summer: Water once every 2 to 3 weeks. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering again.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: No watering is necessary unless indoor air is very dry. A dry winter rest is beneficial.
⚠️ Anti-rot tip: Water preferably in the morning and avoid wetting the cactus body.
🌡️ Growth temperature: 20 to 28°C.
❄️ Minimum tolerance: Can withstand temperatures down to 0°C if kept dry, but prolonged frost should be avoided.
🏠 Indoor cultivation: Very suitable. Consider moving it outdoors in spring once night temperatures stay above 10°C.
🪨 Ideal substrate: 1/3 cactus soil, 1/3 pumice or perlite, 1/3 pozzolana.
🚫 Avoid rich, moisture-retaining soils.
🌸 Period: From May to July.
🎨 Flower color: Bright pink to lilac.
📏 Size: 1 to 2 cm, forming a crown around the apex.
✨ Tip: To encourage flowering, provide a cool, dry winter rest.
