Ferocactus Herrerae
Ferocactus Herrerae is a majestic cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family, known for its imposing silhouette and spectacular spines. Native to northern Mexico, particularly the states of Sonora and Sinaloa, it stands out with its spherical to cylindrical body and its ability to become a true giant in open ground. In pots, it remains more modest in size but retains all its presence.
Its bright green epidermis is marked by pronounced ribs on which powerful areoles bear radial and central spines. These spines, often curved, take on shades ranging from golden yellow to coppery red depending on age and exposure. They give Ferocactus Herrerae an almost defensive appearance, worthy of the arid landscapes from which it originates.
In summer, it offers brilliant flowering: large bright yellow flowers appear at the top, sometimes grouped in a crown. This display, although seasonal, is one of the major assets of this species.
🌞 Ideal exposure: full sun all year round.
🌤️ In very hot summer: light protection during the hottest hours will prevent burns on young tissues.
💡 The more intense the exposure, the warmer and deeper the spine colors become.
💧 Spring / summer: moderate watering every 2 to 3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / winter: greatly reduce or stop completely if the plant is cool and resting.
⚠️ Excess water can quickly cause root and collar rot.
🌡️ Ideal: 20 to 30°C during growth.
❄️ Minimum: occasionally down to -5°C when dry, but it is recommended to bring it indoors if temperatures drop below 5°C.
🏠 In winter, a bright and dry location is ideal to prevent etiolation.
🪨 Recommended mix: 40% cactus soil + 30% perlite + 30% pozzolana
This mix ensures optimal aeration and limits the risk of rot.
🌸 Period: summer, generally between June and August.
🎨 Color: bright yellow, sometimes slightly orange at the center.
🕑 Duration: a few days per flower, but several may open successively.
💡 Good exposure and winter rest encourage abundant flowering.
