Echinopsis Multiplex
The Echinopsis Multiplex, also called the “Queen of the Night cactus,” is a fascinating species from the Cactaceae family, famous for its spectacular nocturnal flowering. This globular or slightly cylindrical cactus is native to South America, mainly Brazil and Argentina. Highly appreciated for its sober appearance and dazzling blooms, it appeals to both passionate collectors and beginner gardeners.
The body of the Echinopsis Multiplex is usually dark green, ribbed, with well-spaced areoles bearing fine spines. Its shape may remain globular or elongate slightly over time. It can reach up to 20–30 cm in height and may produce offsets around the base.
This cactus is famous for its large tubular flowers, white to pale pink, sometimes up to 20 cm long. They bloom at night and usually last only one day, which explains its poetic nickname. Their intoxicating fragrance attracts nocturnal pollinators.
🌞 Direct light: It needs 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Good light exposure promotes flowering.
⛱️ Beware of intense sun: In summer, especially during heatwaves, light shading is recommended to prevent sunburn on the epidermis.
🌱 Spring / Summer: Water once every 2 to 3 weeks, when the substrate is completely dry at depth.
❄️ Autumn / Winter: Drastically reduce watering. During dormancy, watering once every 1 to 2 months is sufficient, or none at all if kept in a cool room.
⚠️ Excess water can cause root rot. Always use well-draining cactus soil and remove standing water.
❄️ Cold tolerance: It can withstand down to 0°C in very dry conditions, but wintering at 8–12°C in a dry and bright place is preferable.
🪨 Ideal mix: 1/2 cactus soil + 1/4 pumice + 1/4 pozzolana.
🕗 Period: Late spring to summer (often after a period of water stress).
🎨 Color: White, sometimes with pink shades.
💐 Special feature: Highly fragrant nocturnal flower that lasts only one day.
