Astrophytum Myriostigma Onzuka
The Astrophytum Myriostigma Onzuka is a true star among ornamental cacti. It is a fascinating cultivar of Astrophytum Myriostigma, known for its star-shaped silhouette, here displayed in an absolutely unique white marbled coat. This variety is the result of meticulous Japanese breeding, which gave it an epidermis densely covered with white flakes and marbled patterns that vary from one specimen to another. In other words: no onzuka is ever the same.
Its intriguing appearance, reminiscent of a celestial pebble or an alien egg, has earned it a place of honor in cactus collections worldwide. This "nudum" or nearly glabrous form has no spines, which enhances its soft and graphic appearance. The Astrophytum myriostigma onzuka remains a compact plant, perfect for pot cultivation, bright indoor spaces, or greenhouses.
In their natural environment, Astrophytums grow among limestone rocks in arid and sunny areas, where water is scarce and temperature differences are significant. This extreme adaptation gives the onzuka its robustness, provided its specific needs are respected.
🌞 Bright light or filtered sun: place it near a south- or west-facing window.
🌤️ Avoid intense direct sun behind glass in summer, as this may cause spots.
💡 Tip: rotate the pot regularly to ensure even growth and prevent etiolation.
🌱 Spring / Summer: water every 15 to 20 days once the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: stop watering entirely. Winter rest is essential to prevent rot.
⚠️ Tip: always use non-calcareous water at room temperature.
🔥 Optimal range: between 22°C and 30°C during the growing season.
❄️ Cold tolerance: down to 5°C if the substrate is completely dry, but protect from frost.
🏠 Wintering: a bright, cool room (between 8°C and 12°C) will stimulate future flowering.
🪨 Ideal mix: 1/3 cactus soil, 1/3 pumice, 1/3 pozzolana.
🌼 Flowers: lemon yellow, sometimes with a reddish throat.
📆 Period: generally from June to August.
🌞 Conditions: good water stress, abundant light, and a mature plant favor flowering.
