Astrophytum Caput-Medusae
The Astrophytum Caput-Medusae is a cactus that is as fascinating as it is unusual. Unlike other species of the Astrophytum genus, which are generally globular or ribbed, this one displays a tubular, tentacle-like form reminiscent of the serpents of the mythological Medusa, from which its Latin name caput-medusae (Medusa’s head) is derived.
Each “tentacle” is in fact an elongated tubercle emerging from a conical base. This unique structure makes it instantly recognizable and highly sought after by collectors of rare plants. At maturity, the Astrophytum Caput-Medusae can form a dense, sculptural clump reaching up to 20 cm in diameter.
This cactus has no prominent spines, and its surface is sometimes covered with a fine white bloom. During flowering, it produces stunning yellow flowers with an orange center, which contrast beautifully with the dark green color of its tubercles.
🌞 Ideal exposure: full sun for at least 6 hours per day.
🌤️ Summer protection: during heatwaves, provide light shade to prevent the tubercles from drying out.
💡 Indoors: place near a south-facing window or use a grow light.
🌱 Spring / summer: one watering every 3 to 4 weeks. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry.
🍂 Autumn / winter: no watering at all. The plant enters dormancy and water could be fatal.
⚠️ Tip: use water at room temperature and avoid letting water accumulate at the base.
🌡️ Optimal temperature: between 22°C and 30°C.
❄️ Critical threshold: never drop below 5°C, even when dry.
🏠 Winter advice: overwinter indoors in a bright, unheated room.
🪨 Ideal mix: 1/3 cactus potting soil, 1/3 pumice, 1/3 pozzolana.
🌸 Season: from May to August, often in successive waves.
🎨 Color: bright yellow with an orange center.
🕑 Duration: each flower lasts only 1 to 2 days but renews regularly.
💡 Flowering tip: a dry winter dormancy period is essential to trigger flowering the following summer.
