Astrophytum Asterias Super Kabuto
The Astrophytum Asterias Super Kabuto is a botanical marvel and one of the most sought-after cacti among collectors. Derived from the famous Astrophytum Asterias, this particular variety stands out thanks to its spectacular patterns and almost cosmic appearance.
This spineless, globular cactus with a flattened shape features a dark epidermis marbled with more or less dense white dots depending on the specimen. The characteristic “flakes” of the Super Kabuto resemble stellar projections, giving it a unique celestial look. Each specimen is a living work of art.
With an adult diameter of 6 to 8 cm, this cactus remains compact, making it ideal for collectors looking for small but exceptional plants. Its almost perfect geometric shape makes it a favorite at succulent exhibitions worldwide.
In its natural habitat, it grows directly on the ground, often camouflaged among gravelly substrates, benefiting from partial shade provided by low shrubs or sparse grasses.
🌞 Filtered sun or bright light: This variety tolerates direct light but prefers a softened exposure to avoid burning the white flakes.
🏜️ To avoid: Full summer sun, especially behind glass, which can cause irreversible brown spots on the epidermis.
🌱 Spring / Summer: Water only when the substrate is completely dry, about once every 3 to 4 weeks.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: No watering at all. This dry rest period is essential to prevent rot.
🌡️ Ideal: Between 22°C and 30°C during the day.
❄️ Minimum threshold: 8°C. Below this, ambient humidity becomes dangerous.
🏠 Wintering: Keep it dry in a bright room between 10°C and 15°C.
🪨 Optimal mix: 40% cactus soil + 30% pumice + 30% pozzolana.
🌼 Season: Between May and July.
🎨 Color: Pale yellow with an orange center.
📏 Size: Up to 4 cm in diameter.
💡 Tip: Flowering mainly occurs on well-established, mature plants.
