Astrophytum Myriostigma Kikko
The Astrophytum Myriostigma Kikko is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and sought-after forms of the Astrophytum genus. Resulting from a fascinating mutation of the classic Myriostigma, the kikko is distinguished by its prominent triangular ridges that give it an almost reptilian or crystalline appearance, sculpted by nature itself.
Its epidermis is often gray-green to bluish-green, covered with tiny white flakes called trichomes, forming characteristic star-shaped patterns. This unique texture, combined with the raised ridges, gives it a spectacular and highly graphic look, ideal for capturing natural light and enhancing a cactus collection.
Each Myriostigma Kikko specimen is unique: some have very pronounced crests, others softer ones. This natural diversity makes it an essential collector cactus for enthusiasts of unusual forms.
🌞 Direct light: at least 6 hours per day to preserve its color and prevent etiolation.
🌤️ Summer protection: during heatwaves (>35°C), provide partial shade to avoid sunburn.
💡 Insufficient light slows growth and may dull the flaked patterns.
🌱 Spring / Summer: water about every 3 weeks.
🍂 Autumn / Winter: stop or greatly reduce watering. During dormancy, less is better.
⚠️ Always use a draining substrate and ensure the pot is dry before watering again.
❄️ Tolerance threshold: the myriostigma kikko can withstand brief drops to 5°C in winter if kept completely dry.
🏠 Indoors: in winter, place it in a bright, cool, and well-ventilated room.
🪨 Ideal substrate: mix cactus soil with pumice and pozzolana.
🔁 Repot every 2–3 years into a slightly larger pot, preferably in spring.
🌼 Lemon-yellow flowers, usually solitary, appearing at the top of the cactus after several years of cultivation.
🕑 Period: generally from May to July.
💡 Optimal exposure and light water stress can stimulate flowering.
