Agave Filifera Cristata
The Agave Filifera Cristata is a rare and fascinating form of Agave Filifera, displaying crested growth, known as “cristate”, which deforms the usual rosette into swirling waves. This natural mutation, highly appreciated by collectors, gives the plant a totally unique, almost sculptural appearance. It combines the finesse of the white filaments characteristic of the classic species with a distorted yet harmonious architecture reminiscent of a vegetal coral.
Each specimen is unique: some develop long sinuous crests, others more compact and branched forms. The leaves, although still edged with decorative white threads, overlap in unusual directions, creating a complex and captivating whole. This crested form remains rare on the market, making it a prized plant among enthusiasts of atypical agaves and mutant forms.
It retains the hardiness qualities of the base species: it is drought-resistant, tolerates container cultivation well, and remains of reasonable size. Perfectly suited to small spaces, Agave Filifera Cristata can be grown outdoors (in mild climates) as well as in very bright interiors.
🌞 Outdoors : full sun exposure, provided it is gradually acclimated.
🌤️ Indoors : place it in front of a bay window, ideally facing south. Too little light would result in disordered growth.
💡 Tip : rotate the pot regularly to prevent the crest from leaning to one side.
🌱 Warm season : every 2 to 3 weeks, depending on temperature and ambient humidity.
🍂 In winter : space watering as much as possible, or stop completely if the plant is kept cool.
⚠️ Warning : the crested form may retain slightly more moisture at the base. It is therefore crucial to use a perfectly draining substrate to avoid any accumulation.
🌡️ Ideal : between 20°C and 28°C.
❄️ Lower limit : down to –4°C in dry soil, but it is best kept frost-free, especially in pots.
🏠 In winter : a bright and cool place (5–10°C) is perfect for wintering.
🌸 If flowering occurs : very late, after several years
📏 Flower stalk : sometimes shorter than in the classic form
🕑 After flowering : like any agave, it dies afterward, but offsets may appear depending on conditions
