Portulacaria Namaquensis
The Portulacaria Namaquensis is a climbing succulent native to the arid coastal regions of Namibia and South Africa, highly appreciated for its dense foliage and vigorous growth.
This plant is characterized by its fleshy, reddish to light brown stems bearing small, round, fleshy and glossy bright green leaves. In cultivation, it quickly forms a bushy shrub that can be trained on supports, allowed to cascade in hanging baskets, or pruned into topiary shapes. Its graphic habit resembles a living curtain, ideal for covering a bright wall or filling a hanging basket.
In its natural habitat, Portulacaria Namaquensis grows on rocky cliffs exposed to sea spray, tolerating drought, salty winds, and marked temperature contrasts. Indoors or in a greenhouse, it reflects this hardiness with great tolerance to missed waterings and moderate temperature fluctuations. Its growth is particularly rapid during the warm season, and it can be easily propagated by cuttings.
☀️ Ideal exposure : Full sun or light partial shade, allowing it to maintain compact and glossy foliage.
🌿 Indoors : Choose a location near a south- or west-facing window, without harsh direct midday sun.
💧 Growing period (spring/summer) : Water once every two weeks, when the substrate is completely dry at the surface and deep down.
❄️ Winter rest : Limit watering to once per month or stop completely if the plant is kept in a cool place (10–15 °C).
🌡️ Optimal range : Between 18 °C and 30 °C during growth.
❄️ Tolerance threshold : Down to 5 °C in dry substrate, but it should be protected as soon as night temperatures drop below 10 °C.
🪨 Recommended mix : 50% cactus substrate, 30% perlite and 20% pozzolana. This mix promotes good drainage and limits the risk of rot.
🌸 Appearance : In spring or early summer, on mature stems.
🎨 Flowers : Small, purple, grouped in light panicles.
