Monadenium Rubellum
The Monadenium Rubellum is a distinctive succulent native to East Africa, prized by collectors for its graceful silhouette and bright pink flowers. It develops one or several caudexes — tuberous structures at the base — from which slender, green to slightly bluish stems emerge, adorned with fine deciduous leaves. This graphic, almost minimalist appearance makes it a striking decorative plant, both understated and full of character.
Its name “rubellum” refers to its inflorescences: bright pink to purple cyathia (flowers typical of the Euphorbiaceae family), which contrast beautifully with the discreet foliage. It is a plant admired as much for its structure as for its flowering, and when well cultivated, it can become a true collector’s gem.
Undemanding, the Monadenium Rubellum is especially appreciated for its ability to withstand drought and thrive in bright indoor conditions. It requires little attention, but plenty of light — an ideal combination for lovers of rare, low-maintenance plants.
🌞 Place it in a very bright location, ideally facing south or west.
🌤️ It tolerates non-scorching direct sun, but appreciates slight protection during the hottest hours.
💡 A lack of light will slow its growth and may affect flowering.
💧 During its growing period (spring/summer), water moderately every two to three weeks, waiting until the substrate is completely dry.
❄️ In winter, greatly reduce watering or stop completely, especially if the plant is kept in a cool environment.
⚠️ Absolutely avoid leaving water standing in the saucer: this could damage the caudex.
🌡️ Ideal temperatures: between 20 °C and 30 °C.
❄️ Minimum tolerance: 10 °C. Below this, it should be overwintered in a protected and bright place.
🏠 It adapts well to apartment growing, as long as the air is dry and the pot well-drained.
🪨 You can use a specific potting soil and improve it with pumice or perlite to obtain an ideal texture.
🌸 It occurs in summer, in the form of small pink to purple-red flowers.
🧲 These flowers appear in a ring along the stems, often toward the tips.
💡 A well-exposed and moderately stressed plant (with slight water restriction) will be more likely to flower regularly.
