Monadenium Ritchiei
The Monadenium Ritchiei is a remarkable succulent plant, halfway between the exuberance of a euphorbia and the sculptural elegance of an African cactus. Native to the semi-arid regions of East Africa, this species stands out with its thick pale green stems dotted with small spiral protuberances, from which charming small leaves sometimes emerge. It draws attention both for its intriguing shape and its variable tones depending on light exposure.
This Monadenium has a bushy to branched habit, forming short fleshy stems that can turn reddish-purple under light stress. Its growth is slow but steady, making it an ideal plant for lovers of unusual shapes in pots or rock gardens. In addition to its original aesthetics, it is highly drought-resistant, a quality that makes it perfect for bright interiors or verandas.
Contrary to what one might think, the Monadenium Ritchiei can flower easily in cultivation. Its small tubular flowers, often red to purple, emerge directly on the stems, contrasting beautifully with the plant’s soft green. Although discreet, they add a welcome splash of color, especially at the end of summer.
