Gymnocalycium Schickendantzii
The Gymnocalycium Schickendantzii is an elegant globular cactus native to South America, particularly appreciated for its ease of cultivation and delicate flowering. It belongs to the large Cactaceae family and stands out with its simple and refined appearance, ideal for cactus enthusiasts both beginners and experienced.
This cactus has a spherical to slightly flattened shape, with well-defined and regular ribs. Its color varies from light green to greyish green, sometimes slightly bluish depending on growing conditions. The areoles are spaced and bear fine spines, generally not very aggressive, making it more accessible than other more spiny species.
The Gymnocalycium Schickendantzii remains of moderate size, generally reaching between 8 and 15 cm in diameter in cultivation. This compact size makes it an excellent choice for pot cultivation, on a windowsill or in a cactus collection.
It evolves in arid environments, with well-drained soils and strong sun exposure.
🌞 Bright light to indirect sun: ideal for harmonious growth and good cactus coloration.
🌤️ Moderate direct sun: possible in the morning or late in the day, but to be avoided during the hottest hours without acclimation.
🏠 Indoor cultivation: place it near an east or south-facing window with filtered light.
🌱 Spring / summer (active period): water moderately when the substrate is completely dry, about every 2 to 3 weeks.
🍂 Autumn / winter (rest): greatly reduce watering, or even almost stop completely if the plant is kept cool.
⚡ Essential rule: always let it dry completely between waterings.
🌞 Ideal temperature: between 18°C and 30°C during the growth period.
🌡️ Thermal amplitude: tolerates day/night variations well, favorable to its natural growth.
❄️ Minimum temperature: can occasionally drop to 5°C if the substrate is dry.
🏠 Wintering: a cooler (10-15°C) and dry period promotes dormancy and future flowering.
🪨 Key principle: light, airy and mostly mineral soil.
🔬 Recommended mix: 30 to 40% cactus substrate + 30 to 40% perlite + 20 to 30% pouzzolane
🌸 Period: from spring to early summer, sometimes prolonged in optimal conditions
🎨 Color: pure white to pale pink, sometimes slightly streaked
🌼 Shape: large funnel-shaped flowers, appearing at the top of the cactus
📏 Feature: relatively large flowers compared to the size of the cactus
