Turbinicarpus Schwarzii
Turbinicarpus schwarzii is a rare miniature cactus highly sought after by collectors for its distinctive appearance and delicate flowering.
Its small size, rarely exceeding 3 to 4 cm in diameter, conceals a globular dark green to brownish-green body, often covered with a fine bloom. Its triangular tubercles are topped with areoles bearing short black to brownish spines, sometimes slightly curved, giving it a sober and elegant look.
Native to the mountainous regions of Mexico, it is perfectly adapted to rocky limestone soils and arid conditions. Its flowering, which often occurs in spring, consists of small white to pink flowers with a bright yellow center, creating a striking contrast with the dark body.
Turbinicarpus schwarzii is easy to grow in pots and ideal for lovers of botanical miniatures, provided its specific needs for light, substrate, and watering are respected.
Its natural environment is characterized by strong sunlight, a dry climate with rare summer rains, and cool but dry winters. The substrate is highly mineral, mainly composed of gravel and calcareous sand, ensuring perfect drainage.
🌞 Direct light: at least 4 to 6 hours per day.
🌤️ Summer protection: light shade during the hottest hours in summer to prevent burns.
⚠️ Insufficient light may cause etiolation and reduced flowering.
🌱 Spring / summer: water moderately every 2 to 3 weeks, only when the substrate is dry.
🍂 Autumn / winter: greatly reduce or completely stop watering, especially if temperatures are cool.
⚡ Tip: prefer quick soaking watering, then allow to dry completely.
🌞 Ideal: 20 to 28°C.
❄️ Minimum: 5°C if the soil is dry.
🏠 Overwintering: dry and bright, between 5 and 10°C to encourage flowering.
🪨 Recommended substrate: cactus mix enriched with 50% draining materials such as perlite or pozzolana.
🌸 Period: spring, sometimes summer.
🎨 Color: pure white to pale pink, yellow center.
🕑 Duration: each flower lasts a few days.
💡 To stimulate flowering: cool winter rest, full sun, and cactus fertilizer in spring.
