Albuca Spiralis
The Albuca Spiralis, also known as "Frizzle Sizzle", is a bulbous succulent plant native to South Africa. It is instantly recognizable thanks to its tightly curled spiral green leaves, resembling corkscrews. This plant is both curious and charming, attracting plant lovers who enjoy unusual species.
The leaves appear in late autumn or early winter depending on temperature and watering. Their spiral shape develops best in direct light with minimal watering. In spring, the Albuca Spiralis produces a flowering stalk reaching 30 to 50 cm, topped with delicate yellow, pendulous flowers with a vanilla fragrance.
Its growth and appearance are closely linked to its natural cycle: it grows in winter and enters dormancy in summer. Respecting this cycle is essential to maintain its spiral leaves and ensure annual flowering.
🌞 Direct sunlight: At least 4 to 6 hours of sun or very bright light per day.
🌤️ Indoors: Place near a south-facing window or under a grow light.
⚠️ Lack of light causes straight leaves without spirals.
🌱 Winter / spring: Growth period – water moderately when the substrate is fully dry.
☀️ Summer: Dormancy – stop watering completely and allow the bulb to dry.
⚡ Tip: Always use a pot with drainage holes and cactus soil to prevent excess moisture.
🌡️ Ideal temperature: 15–25°C
❄️ Minimum tolerated: 5°C – do not expose to frost
🏠 In winter: Keep indoors in a bright, cool room.
🪨 Recommended mix: 1/3 cactus soil + 1/3 pumice stone + 1/3 pozzolana.
🌸 Season: from late February to May
🌼 Appearance: upright flower stalks bearing several yellow bell-shaped flowers
🌿 Fragrance: pleasant vanilla scent
💡 Tip: flowering occurs more easily when summer dormancy is respected.
