Pedilanthus Macrocarpus Cristata
The Pedilanthus Macrocarpus Cristata is a fascinating mutant form of the classic Pedilanthus Macrocarpus, a plant native to the arid regions of northwestern Mexico. This “crested” form is the result of a natural growth anomaly known as fasciation, which causes fan-shaped growth instead of vertical stems. The result is a plant with rare aesthetic appeal, featuring undulating, sinuous and sometimes sculptural shapes that immediately catch the eye in any succulent collection.
Instead of producing straight tubular stems like the typical form, the Pedilanthus Macrocarpus Cristata develops an irregular crest, often flat and twisted, with a sinuous, sometimes toothed margin. Its color remains soft green to bluish, but may take on silvery tones under strong light. This crested structure develops slowly but offers a truly unique architectural appearance, making this plant a genuine living work of art, equally at home in a gallery or a sunroom.
🌞 Direct sun: Tolerated in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid harsh midday sun in summer.
🏠 Indoors: Place it as close as possible to a south- or west-facing window to ensure maximum light.
🌱 Active period (spring / summer): Water every 3 weeks, once the substrate is completely dry throughout.
❄️ Rest period (autumn / winter): Reduce to monthly watering, or even less if the plant is kept cool.
⚠️ Warning: Excess moisture causes the crested tissues to rot, which are particularly sensitive.
🌡️ Ideal: Between 20°C and 30°C.
❄️ Minimum threshold: 5°C. Below this, the plant is at risk. Protect it from frost and cold humidity.
🪨 Recommended mix: 50% cactus potting soil + 25% perlite + 25% pumice.
🪴 Suitable pots: Prefer terracotta pots to promote moisture evaporation.
🌼 Flowers: Small, red or orange, beak-shaped, appearing at the tips of the crests.
📅 Flowering period: Generally in summer, on well-exposed mature plants.
