Lophocereus Schottii
The Lophocereus Schottii, often nicknamed “Totem Pole” in its crested or monstrous forms, is a fascinating cactus native to the Sonoran Desert. Instantly recognizable, it forms long cylindrical columns, sometimes ribbed or smooth, which can reach several meters in height in its natural habitat.
This cactus, often spineless or with very reduced spines, has an almost sculptural appearance. Its vertical growth, slow but steady, makes it an ideal plant for large bright spaces or as a focal point in a collection. Its totem-like silhouette combines the elegance of columnar cacti with the uniqueness of abnormal forms.
The color of the epidermis ranges from light green to gray-green depending on light exposure and plant maturity. Its fascinating shape has inspired many highly sought-after horticultural mutations, notably the “monstruosa” and crested forms.
In the wild, it often grows alongside agaves, desert ferns, and other endemic cacti.
☀️ Outdoors: Full sun is ideal, especially in spring and autumn. In summer, provide light shade if temperatures exceed 35 °C, especially for young plants.
🏠 Indoors: Place it near a south-facing window to ensure maximum brightness. Lophocereus schottii tolerates the dry climate of indoor environments well.
💧 Warm season (March to September): Water once every 3 to 4 weeks. Always allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
❄️ Winter: Keep completely dry from November to February. This rest period promotes better growth in spring.
⚠️ Warning: Excess moisture can cause rot. Proper drainage is essential.
🌡️ Ideal: Between 20 and 35 °C during the day.
❄️ Minimum: Down to 5 °C in dry soil. Avoid frost at all costs.
🪨 Recommended mix: 50 % cactus potting soil, 25 % perlite and 25 % pumice.
💡 Tip: Slightly elevate the pot to further improve drainage.
🌼 Flowering conditions: A mature specimen (several years old), excellent light exposure, a dry winter rest and a suitable fertilizer application in spring may encourage discreet flowering.
