Lophocereus Schottii Monstruosus
The Lophocereus Schottii Monstruosus is a fascinating mutant form of the classic Lophocereus Schottii, a cactus native to the Sonoran Desert. This variety, also nicknamed the “Totem Pole Cactus”, has a strange columnar habit, without visible areoles or spines, and with an irregular, almost human relief.
Each column of this cactus is dotted with bumps, swellings, folds, and scars that give it the appearance of ancient statues or totems sculpted by nature. This spectacular character makes the Monstruosus a true collector plant, highly prized in desert gardens and collectors’ greenhouses.
Unlike the classic version, this monstrous form has undergone a stable genetic mutation that alters its cellular development. The result is a very particular cactus, unique in appearance but also very easy to grow.
The Monstruosus version is rarely observed in nature. It is mainly propagated in cultivation by cuttings or grafting to stabilize its strange form.
🌞 Outdoors: full sun exposure recommended
🌤️ Indoors: must be placed near a well-oriented window (south or southwest)
A lack of light will cause loss of structure, stretching of columns, and duller greening.
🌱 Spring / summer: water every 3 to 4 weeks, only if the substrate is completely dry
🍂 Autumn / winter: stop watering completely if temperatures drop below 10°C
⚠️ Warning: excess water is the main cause of rot. Better too little than too much.
🌞 Ideal range: between 20°C and 35°C
❄️ Lower limit: 5°C when dry (do not expose to frost)
🏠 Wintering: bring into a greenhouse or veranda as soon as temperatures drop below 8°C
🪨 Recommended mix: 50% pumice + 30% pozzolana + 20% cactus potting soil
A heavy pot (terracotta) is recommended to stabilize tall stems, especially when grown outdoors.
🌸 Season: late spring to summer
🎨 Color: pale pink to light purple
🕑 Duration: 2 to 3 days, with nocturnal or early morning flowering
💡 Particularity: flowers appear on the few functional areoles, generally at the top of the column
