Xerosicyos Danguyi
The Xerosicyos Danguyi — also known as the “Silver Dollar Plant” — is a botanical curiosity native to Madagascar. Although it is not a true cactus, this succulent is often grown alongside cacti due to its graphic appearance and similar care requirements. It is distinguished by its thick, round, silvery-green leaves that resemble hanging coins along climbing stems.
Its dense and ornamental foliage immediately catches the eye, whether grown in a pot or trained on a support. Given enough space, its climbing habit can reach several meters, making it ideal for trellises or pergolas. In pots, it maintains a compact, trailing form, perfect for hanging displays. Despite its delicate appearance, Xerosicyos Danguyi is a robust and easy-care plant, appreciated for its originality.
Its name comes from the Greek “xeros” (dry) and “sicyos” (cucumber), referring to its succulent leaves and tiny fruits. It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, the same family as squash and cucumbers.
🌤️ Indoors: Place it near a well-exposed window, preferably south-facing.
🌞 Outdoors: Grow it in full sun or light partial shade, sheltered from heavy rain.
☀️ Bright light encourages compact leaves and denser growth.
💦 Spring / Summer: Water every 2 to 3 weeks depending on temperature. Allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
❄️ Winter: Greatly reduce watering, or stop completely if kept cool.
⚠️ Wrinkled leaves indicate underwatering, but overwatering can quickly cause rot.
🌡️ Ideal range: 20 to 30 °C.
❄️ Minimum tolerated: Down to 5 °C if the substrate is completely dry.
🏠 Winter advice: In cold climates, overwinter indoors or in a bright, frost-free greenhouse.
🪴 Ideal mix: 50% cactus soil, 30% coarse sand, and 20% perlite or pumice.
A drainage layer at the bottom of the pot is strongly recommended.
🌼 Flowers: Small, yellow-green, and not particularly ornamental.
💡 Tip: Mature plants grown in strong light and subjected to slight drought stress are more likely to bloom.
