Thelocactus Hexaedrophorus
Thelocactus Hexaedrophorus is a rare and elegant cactus highly sought after by collectors for its geometric forms and spectacular flowering.
Its globular stem, bluish-green to silvery gray, is marked by broad polygonal tubercles separated by deep grooves, giving the plant an almost architectural appearance. Each areole bears a small number of sturdy spines, straight or slightly curved, often cream to brownish in color.
Growth is slow, but Thelocactus Hexaedrophorus gains character with age. In the warm season, it produces large pale pink to bright pink flowers, sometimes slightly striped, beautifully contrasting with the subdued tone of the stem.
Native to semi-arid regions of Mexico, it has developed survival strategies adapted to intense heat, prolonged drought, and poor mineral soils. Its resilience and aesthetics make it a centerpiece for any cactus enthusiast.
In its natural habitat, it grows on well-drained limestone slopes, often between stones, benefiting from water accumulation during rare rains while avoiding stagnation thanks to the relief and mineral soil structure. Strong sunlight and significant temperature differences between day and night have shaped its robust and compact morphology.
🌞 Direct sun: minimum 6 hours per day to maintain its bluish color and stimulate flowering.
🌤️ Light shade in extreme heat: slight protection during heatwaves prevents burns.
⚠️ Insufficient light leads to unattractive stretching and weakened spines.
🌱 Spring / summer: water approximately every 20 to 30 days, allowing the substrate to dry completely.
🍂 Autumn / winter: greatly reduce or stop watering if kept cool.
⚡ Tip: always use non-calcareous water and avoid watering when temperatures are below 10°C.
🌞 Ideal: 20 to 30°C.
❄️ Minimum: tolerates down to 5°C if the substrate remains dry.
🏠 Overwintering: bring indoors if temperatures regularly drop below 10°C.
🪨 Recommended substrate: cactus mix.
➕ Enhance with perlite or pozzolana to maximize drainage.
🌸 Period: late spring to summer.
🎨 Color: pale pink to bright pink, yellow center.
🕑 Duration: a few days per flower, with several possible waves.
💡 To stimulate: plenty of sun, a cool and dry winter, and a light application of cactus fertilizer in spring.
