Marginatocereus Marginatus Cristata
The Marginatocereus Marginatus Cristata is an absolutely fascinating crested cactus, rare in cultivation and highly prized by collectors for its unique and sculptural silhouette. This “cristata” form comes from a natural mutation that causes fan-shaped growth rather than classic vertical columns, creating sinuous and dynamic crests reminiscent of petrified waves.
Its bright green to blue-green color is often highlighted by fine white areoles bordering its crests. These areoles bear short ivory-white spines, sometimes pinkish under strong light. The contrast between the fleshy green body and the white-edged crests gives it a striking graphic appearance.
Each Marginatocereus Marginatus Cristata is a living work of art. No two specimens are alike. Some develop tight rooster-comb waves, others swirling masses reminiscent of fossilized corals. This variability is what makes this variety so interesting for collectors.
🌞 Direct sun: Place it in full sun, at least 6 hours per day, to maintain its compact form and beautiful colors. It tolerates summer sun very well if gradually acclimated.
🌤️ Summer protection: In case of extreme heat (above 35°C), light afternoon shade can prevent sunburn, especially for young plants or in greenhouses.
🌱 Growth period (spring–summer): Water every 20 to 25 days, ensuring the substrate is completely dry between waterings.
🍂 Dormant period (autumn–winter): Stop watering as soon as temperatures drop below 12°C. A dry plant overwinters better and is far less prone to rot.
⚠️ Essential advice: Perfect drainage with pumice stone or pozzolana is crucial to avoid excess moisture.
❄️ Cold resistance: Can withstand short drops down to 5°C, but without watering and protected from frost.
🏠 Indoors in winter: Place it behind a very bright window in a cool room (ideally 10–15°C).
🪨 Recommended substrate: 50% cactus potting soil, 25% pumice stone, 25% sand or pozzolana. This ensures optimal drainage and healthy growth.
🌼 Flowers: small, tubular, white to greenish.
🕑 Period: late spring to summer.
🪷 Conditions: mature plant, well exposed and lightly watered in spring. Flowering remains rare, especially in pots.
